Tea vs. brown water

I don't understand the seemingly common practice of pouring hot water over a tea bag, waiting until the water turns brown, then dumping the tea bag. The water turns brown in about five seconds. The end result is a cup of brown water, not a proper cuppa. Similar to my use of chili powder, my brewing time is 36 times that of the typical brewing time in my office.

Well Bill I just came in from mowing the yard and I have a cup of tea brewing and I agree with you. I let mine sit in the microwave for 10 to 15 minutes and then heat it back up to boiling and sip it with the tea bag still in. Mine never turns brown as I drink green chai tea and use 1/3 milk and 2/3 water. I use a lot of chili powder too!!!!!!!! Plus hot peppers! We must be related!

So they only leave the tea in the cup for half a minute or so? Where is that line between underbrewing and overbrewing? Please Help.

Thanks,
